The AI Max Search Terms and Ad Combinations Report: How to Read It and What to Do

AI Max matched queries you never bid on and wrote headlines you never wrote. A new report finally shows them together. Here is how to turn it into negatives, exclusions and better assets.

Why this report matters

AI Max for Search campaigns does three things at once: it expands matching beyond your keywords, customises ad text, and can send people to a different landing page on your site. Until now you could see expanded search terms and, separately, asset performance, but not which headline and URL a given query actually received. That gap made it hard to tell whether a bad lead came from a bad query, a bad generated headline or the wrong page.

The search terms and ad combinations report closes that gap by showing the search term together with the headline, description and final URL served. Google's help documentation describes it, and it was reported in mid October 2026 as being tested and rolled out gradually.

How to read it

Start with spend, not count. Sort by cost and look at the top 50 rows. That is where waste concentrates.

Check intent fit. For each row, ask whether the query is a buyer, a researcher, a job seeker or a competitor search. Research and job queries in a high-ticket account are almost always waste.

Check the message. Does the generated headline make a claim you cannot support, mention a price or offer you do not have, or promise something your page does not deliver? Generated text can drift.

Check the page. Final URL expansion can send buyers to a blog post or careers page. If the landing page is wrong for the intent, add URL exclusions.

A known reporting trap

Practitioners have pointed out that filtering the normal search terms report by the "AI Max" match type does not capture all AI Max traffic, because some expanded matches are attributed in other ways. Use the dedicated report where you have it, and compare total campaign spend against what your filtered view shows. If the numbers do not reconcile, you are not seeing everything. See our earlier AI Max upgrade checklist.

What to do with what you find

Negatives: add irrelevant query themes as negative keywords at campaign or account level, using shared lists.

URL exclusions: exclude blog, careers, support and policy pages from final URL expansion, or turn it off for lead generation campaigns where the landing page does the qualifying.

Brand and text controls: use brand exclusions and text guidelines where available to stop claims you cannot make.

Asset rewrites: where a generated headline outperformed yours on good queries, learn from it and write a better version yourself.

Feed the system better outcomes: import CRM-qualified conversions so AI Max learns from leads that turn into revenue, not form fills. See enhanced conversions and offline import.

How often to review

Weekly for the first month after enabling AI Max or making large changes, then every two weeks. Expansion keeps exploring, so a clean report this week does not mean a clean report next month. This review sits inside our Google Ads management and is one of the first things we check in a growth audit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AI Max search terms and ad combinations report?

A Google Ads report that shows each search term AI Max matched together with the headline, description and landing page it served.

Do all accounts have it?

Not yet. It was reported in mid October 2026 as a partial, gradual rollout.

Why not just filter the search terms report by AI Max?

That filter can undercount AI Max traffic. Reconcile against total campaign spend.

How do I stop AI Max sending traffic to blog pages?

Add URL exclusions for final URL expansion, or turn final URL expansion off.

Can AI Max write headlines I did not approve?

Yes, text customisation generates ad text. Use brand and text controls and check the report.

How often should I review it?

Weekly for the first month, then every two weeks.

Should lead generation accounts use AI Max?

It can work with tight negatives, URL controls and qualified-lead conversion imports. Without those it often brings low-quality volume.

What is the most important fix after reading the report?

Usually negatives on research and job-seeker queries, then landing page exclusions.

Does the report show conversions?

It shows performance by combination, so you can see which query, text and page pairs convert.
