Google Ads Channel Prioritization and Budget Allocation: How to Use the New Controls
For years the choice was all or nothing: keep Search partners and Display, or switch them off. Google now offers a middle option, and a deadline that will move spend whether you act or not.

What Google announced
On 14 October 2026 Google announced two optional controls. Channel prioritization lets you label channels as high or low priority; campaigns fund high-priority channels first and spend the remainder on low-priority ones. In Search campaigns you can tier Google Search, Search partners and the Display Network separately. In Performance Max and Demand Gen, Google surfaces such as YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover are grouped as "Google channels".
Budget allocation lets you cap low-priority channels at a maximum percentage of daily budget. Google describes this as best effort: its systems aim to keep spend within the limit rather than guaranteeing it. Both settings work at account and campaign level, including shared budgets.
Why it matters
Search partners and the Display Network can bring cheap volume and, for many lead generation accounts, poor-quality leads. The old choice was to accept them or switch them off entirely. The new controls let you keep testing them with a ceiling, so a weak channel cannot quietly take a large share of budget. For Performance Max, it is the first meaningful lever over where spend goes beyond asset and feed choices. See Performance Max junk leads.
How to set it up sensibly
1. Look at the data first. Segment conversions and, ideally, qualified leads or revenue by network for the last 90 days.
2. High priority for proven channels. Usually Google Search for lead generation and Search plus Shopping for e-commerce.
3. Low priority with a cap for unproven ones. Start Search partners and Display at a modest cap, such as 10 to 20 per cent, then adjust on outcome data.
4. Judge on real outcomes. Use CRM-qualified leads or contribution margin, not platform conversions, because cheap channels often look best on reported conversions alone. See leads but no sales.
5. Recheck monthly as the rollout continues and as Google refines the controls.
The February 2027 change
Google says that starting in February 2027, Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on will lose the current spend allocation setup, which may shift spending between channels. If you want to keep things close to how they run today, Google suggests setting the Display Network to low priority with a 50 per cent allocation. Better still, decide deliberately now based on your own Display performance rather than letting the default decide.
Market notes
In India, Display and partner inventory is large and cheap, so caps protect lead quality most. In the USA, UK and Canada, where Search clicks are expensive, a capped partner test can find cheaper volume without risking the budget. In the UAE, check Arabic and English campaigns separately; partner quality can differ by language. We apply these controls in our Google Ads management.

Is the budget cap guaranteed?
No. Google describes it as best effort, aiming to keep spend within the limit.
What happens in February 2027?
Search campaigns with the Display Network on lose the current spend allocation setup. Google suggests Display at low priority with 50 per cent allocation to stay close to today.
