Getting Cited in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: A Technical SEO, GEO and AEO Checklist
Google says there is nothing special you must do for AI features beyond good SEO. That is true, and it hides a lot of technical detail that decides whether your page is the one that gets used.

What Google says
Google's guidance for AI features in Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, is that the same SEO best practices apply and no special optimisation is required. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. That sounds simple, but most sites that are missing from AI answers fail on basics: blocked resources, thin pages, facts hidden in images or scripts, or no corroboration elsewhere. The newer, stronger models such as Gemini 4 Argon make the stakes higher, not the rules different.
1. Crawl and index access
Confirm key pages return 200, are in your XML sitemap, are not noindexed and are not blocked in robots.txt. Check the URL Inspection tool in Search Console for rendering problems. Do not use nosnippet or max-snippet:0 on pages you want cited. In robots.txt, decide deliberately about AI crawlers: OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot, Applebot. Google-Extended controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding, not appearance in Google Search, so blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews. Bingbot matters for Copilot and for several assistants that use Bing results.
2. Content in plain HTML
Make sure the content that answers questions is in the server-rendered HTML, not loaded later by JavaScript or inside images. Put the answer first: a one or two sentence direct answer under each question heading, then the detail. State facts plainly: who you serve, where, what it costs, how long it takes, what is included. AI systems quote specific, checkable statements far more often than vague claims. See GEO, AEO and AIO explained.
3. Structured data
Use schema.org markup that matches visible content: Organization with sameAs links to your real profiles, LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService for local signals, Service with Offer and price where you publish prices, FAQPage for real FAQs, Article or BlogPosting with author and dates, BreadcrumbList, and Product with offers for e-commerce. Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for most sites, but the markup still helps machines parse the page. Validate with the Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator. Details in schema for AI answers.
4. Entity consistency and corroboration
Models trust facts that appear consistently across independent sources. Align your business name, address, phone, services and prices across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, review sites and press. Earn mentions on relevant industry sites, podcasts and publications. A business that only describes itself on its own website is hard for an AI system to verify. An llms.txt file can give models a clean index of your site; it is not a ranking factor in Google, but it is cheap to add.
5. Page experience and freshness
Fast, stable pages get crawled more and convert better. Keep Core Web Vitals in the good range; see Core Web Vitals and leads. Show visible updated dates on content that changes, and actually update it: prices, policies and platform guides go stale quickly. Use IndexNow for Bing and others when you publish or change pages.
6. Measure it
Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic within Web search totals, without a separate filter. Track referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com in analytics. Run a monthly prompt test: the 20 questions buyers ask, across AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, recording whether you are cited and how you are described. This is the core of our Search Everywhere Optimisation service across India, the USA, the UK, the UAE and Canada.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?
Be indexed and snippet-eligible, answer questions directly in plain HTML, use accurate structured data and build consistent facts across trusted sites.
Does Google require special optimisation for AI Mode?
Google says no; standard SEO best practices apply. In practice, technical basics decide a lot.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls use for Gemini models, not appearance in Google Search features.
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
Those whose products you want to appear in, such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Applebot and Bingbot.
Does llms.txt help rankings?
It is not a Google ranking factor, but it gives models a clean index of your site and is cheap to add.
Does FAQ schema still matter?
FAQ rich results are limited for most sites, but the markup still helps machines understand the page.
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
It is included in Web search totals without a separate filter.
How do I track ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic?
Watch referrals from their domains in analytics and run monthly prompt tests.
Why is my competitor cited and not me?
Usually clearer answers on their page, more corroboration on other sites, or technical blocks on yours.
